The Theology Club at SPbCU held its First Meeting on February 16th, 2010

The topic of the first open-discussion: «Globalization: Pro and Con". Of course, globalization is the spirit of modern day, and it is seen in the culture and world-view in modern aspects. The open table held lively discussions about the modern process of globalization - the process of cultural integration and unification.

The participants highlighted the pros and cons of globalization. The pros included: enrichment of the mutually beneficial; while the cons stated: the prevalence of one culture over the rest.

History brought back several colossuses like the Greek and Roman Empire, China, and even the USSR, when such processes of uniting nations under one culture and one idea, occurred. These examples of globalization are viewed through the prism of historical experience. The participants asked, "Is there a future, for example, for the European Union?"

The consequences of globalization were listed as negative aspects: poverty, inequality, injustice, degradation of democracy, economic crisis, terrorism... On the other hand, the alternative to globalization today is "conservative politics", like Japan.

What concerns globalization in the spiritual sense, it is the loss of the opportunity of distinctive search for God.
